BERNITH LOU STANTON

Milan

Bernith Lou Stanton, 80, of Milan died peacefully Dec. 29, 2006, at home with her family by her side after a lengthy battle with lung cancer.

Mrs. Stanton was born Feb. 19, 1926, in Milan to Oscar O. and Alice (Fullerton) Berkley. She was a graduate of Milan High School.

At the age of 40, she enrolled at Washtenaw Community College and earned an associate's degree. In 1977, she added a bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University, a master's in 1981, also from EMU, and a master's in social work from the University of Michigan in 1985 with a specialist's certificate in gerontology.

Mrs. Stanton proudly worked in various settings as a clinical social worker with older adults and with children with mental retardation. Her special loves included her family, antiques, music, folk arts and rug hooking. She was especially proud to have received her pilot's license in 1966 while working as an aircraft insurance underwriter.

Mrs. Stanton was an active member of the People's Presbyterian Church of Milan since joining in 1935 at 9 years old. She was elected to and served on the Milan Public Library Board for several years.

Mrs. Stanton is survived by Raymond B. Stanton, her loving and devoted husband of 61 years; her five children, Jennifer Kreger of Howell, Jill (Ron) Morey of Milan, Mary (Rick) Fishwick of Chelsea, John (Renee) Stanton of Atlanta and Sarah Stanton (Jay Kukor) of Saline.

She is also survived by nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, honorary family member Donald Barnett, and many close and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frederic Berkley; and a sister, Shirley Niga.

A memorial worship service celebrating her life was held Tuesday at the People's Presbyterian Church. Cremation has taken place.

Memorial contributions may be made to the People's Presbyterian Church or the Milan Public Library.

Online condolences may be made at www.ochalekstark.com.
