A benefit dinner to help the late Joe Mistopoulous' family will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at Christ Our King Lutheran Church, 3255 Waterworks Road, in Saline. Mistopoulous died Dec. 18 after a 15-month battle with brain cancer. Money raised at the dinner will help pay for funeral expenses and medical bills. Mistopoulous left behind a wife and two young sons. The dinner will include a salad, spaghetti, garlic bread, a drink and dessert. A free-will donation will be accepted at the door. "International Year of Astronomy 2009: Science Sundays at Saline District Library" will be held at 2 p.m., featuring physics professor Fred Adams. The dates of the performances are March 20, 21 and 22. Those auditioning are expected to sing 16 bars from a song of their choosing and bring the piano music for the accompanist. "Saline Stingrays Swimming" will be offered by Saline Community Education. This class is for students who are able to swim freestyle or backstroke comfortably for two lengths, or 50 yards, of the competition pool. Class will be held Monday through Friday through March 15. Milan Community Education offers an eight-week adult pottery class from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 14 through March 4. Weekly lessons in hand-building and throwing will be taught by experienced teachers Barbara Boyce and Angela Lenhardt. Classes will be held at Milan High School. The cost is $125 and the price includes everything except personal tools, which can be purchased from the teachers. No experience is necessary. June Manning Thomas, a University of Michigan centennial professor in urban and regional planning, will be the speaker. ALS of Michigan, Lou Gehrig's Disease, will be holding an Ann Arbor support group 6:30 p.m. Mondays for people with ALS and their families. It will provide patients and families with an opportunity to exchange information and resources, and to share concerns and address issues related to living with ALS.
