Development moving forward

Buildings demolished last week to make way for Concannon project

By Sue G. Collins, Staff Writer

Three buildings were razed near downtown Saline last week to make way for the long-anticipated new commercial and residential development, Village Marketplace + Lofts.

The hungry claw of a giant excavator cut through the old walls of a former car dealership showroom and service garage and easily chewed through the crumbling remains of the shell of a filling station at West Michigan Avenue and South Lewis Street last week.

The site is the former home of Steeb Dodge, one of Saline's earliest automobile dealerships built at the location of the former Heininger and Heininger Farm Implements business at 121 W. Michigan Ave. The dealership later expanded and changed owners to become Saline Dodge Chrysler Jeep. The business now stands at 900 W. Michigan Ave. and was sold to LaFontaine Chrysler Dodge Jeep in October.

Ann Arbor-based developer the Concannon Co. bought the property three years ago at the corner of West Michigan Avenue and South Lewis Street with plans to build a $9 million, 60,000-square foot retail and residential complex. Saline City Council approved the site plan and architecture for the building in 2007 after meeting with concerned neighbors and historic district representatives.

Developer Mike Concannon says his company has agreements with Bear Claw Coffee, the Mind Body & Spirit Academe, Fitness Together personal trainer, Elements therapeutic massage, Planet Beach tanning, a health food store and King of Queens Coney Island.

There is also a liquor license available for another restaurant to be located at the east end of the development.

The residential lofts, to be located on the second level, are available for lease or sale and Concannon's office holds a few reservations at this time.

Brownfield remediation is expected to being anytime now, said Concannon and no ground breaking date has yet been set.
