The Hornets rolled past Detroit Country Day 134-52 in a Jan. 8 dual meet before thumping Chelsea 135-51 Friday on the program's Senior Night.
Seniors Justin Duong and Matt DeFauw each celebrated the event in style, with Duong winning all four events he swam (the 100-yard freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay) and DeFauw taking first place in his specialty, the 100 breaststroke.
But head coach Todd Brunty was equally excited about the performances of his younger swimmers, who played a big role in the Hornets, winning 11 out of 12 events against the Bulldogs and posting the easy victory.
"We had a lot of young guys who had great swims even though they were swimming their off-events," Brunty said. "It's exactly what we wanted to see coming out of our Christmas training. They established themselves as contributors."
Among those swimmers against Chelsea were freshman Adam Pummell, who won the 500 freestyle in 5:18.14, and sophomore Mike Hughes, winner of the 100 butterfly in 58.49.
Against DCD, freshman Andrew Krieber won the 200 individual medley in 2:16.57 (ahead of fellow freshman Brad Frost's 2:21.84), sophomore Sam Wittig took the 100 butterfly in 59.12 and Pummell the 100 freestyle in 53.59.
On the diving board, sophomore Hank Remenapp took first in both meets over second-place teammate Joel Chambers, posting totals of 221.95 (vs. DCD) and 212.65 (vs. Chelsea).
But the Hornets' triumphs were far from being limited to the underclassmen. Against Chelsea, Duong and DeFauw were joined on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:44.76) by juniors Fraser Christie and Alex Wu. Junior Steven Hurbis swam 2:00.63 to win the 200 freestyle an event before junior Travis Littlejohn took the 200 individual medley in 2:13.18.
Wu (fresh off a win in 58.51 in the 100 backstroke against DCD) finished runner-up to Littlejohn in the individual medley (in 2:15.51) and to Duong's 50.83 in the 100 freestyle (in 51.45), but led off the victorious 200 freestyle relay (1:35.05), also featuring Waits, Hughes and sophomore Dan Hughes.
Junior Daniel Kung had a similar experience against DCD, finishing second to Duong in the 50 freestyle (in 24.18) before he, Duong, Wu and Dan Hughes won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:34.47.
It's very unlikely Saline will post nearly so many first-place swims in its upcoming dual meets, however. The Hornets will face Division 3 No. 3 Tecumseh Friday, with a quad at Division 1 No. 5 Northville the following day and their dual meet with Ann Arbor Pioneer the following Friday.
"It's really nice (to have the success) right now because we're about to have a tough stretch," Brunty said. "This is where we start making those decisions about who's going to swim what at the end of the year. We're going to be a bit more recuperated and I think we'll swim well."
Other scoring performances against Chelsea included Pummell, Littlejohn, Mike Hughes and Kung (1:49.60, second) in the 200 medley relay; Frost (2:01.76, second) and R.J. Fisher (2:05.06, fourth) in the 200 freestyle; Christie (2:18.40, third) in the 200 individual medley; Pummell (24.70, fourth) in the 50 freestyle; and Nathan Furey (126.15) in diving.
Also, Krieber (59.43, second) and Waits (1:06.09, fourth) in the 100 butterfly; Dan Hughes (56.00, fifth) in the 100 freestyle; Connor Corcoran (5:25.51, second) and Matt Sisken (5:59.19, third) in the 500 freestyle; Krieber, Devin Slagle, Frost, and Christie (1:43.97, third) in the 200 freestyle relay; Kung (1:04.33, third) and Mike Fisher (1:04.37, fourth) in the 100 backstroke; Littlejohn (1:07.41, second) and R.J. Fisher (1:13.72, fourth) in the 100 breaststroke; and Christie, Kung, Krieber, and Littlejohn (3:45.48, second) in the 400 freestyle relay.
