Cold snap!

Hornets break losing streak

By Jerry Hinnen, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: January 18, 2007

The Saline Hornets haven't yet solved their turnover problem.

Last Friday against Lincoln, however, their defense was good enough that they didn't have to.

Saline held the Railsplitters to 43 points on 28.6 percent shooting from the field, which was good enough to overcome 20 turnovers against the Lincoln full-court press and pull out a 47-43 victory.

The win snaps a three-game Hornet losing streak and gives the team both its first Southeastern Conference win and first road win of the season.

Saline now stands at 3-5 (1-2 SEC) on the season.

The Hornets took a slim 12-11 lead after the first quarter before applying the defensive clamps in the second. By holding the home team to eight second-quarter points, Saline was able to stretch the lead to six, 25-19, going into the break.

Some halftime adjustments helped the Hornets deal with the Lincoln pressure in the third quarter and, while entering the final period, the visitors had extended their lead to a comfortable nine points, 38-29.

The Railsplitters turned up the energy in the final period and outscored Saline 14-9 over the final eight minutes. But the Saline defense, which finished the game having forced 17 turnovers of their own, kept Lincoln off balance and two possessions behind up to the final whistle.

Aaron Ziegler led the Hornets in scoring with 13 points. He was joined in double figures by Kyle Larsen with 11. Larsen has now scored in double figures in all three games since being given a starting assignment following the departure of Vince Helmuth.

Following Ziegler and Larsen were Derek Fairchild with eight, Steven Breneman with five, Jacob Santure with four, Jason Danneffel with three and Mike Adler with three.

A big strength of the Saline performance was their 6-of-14 (43 percent) shooting from behind the three-point arc. By comparison, the Hornets shot only 8-29 (28 percent) on their two-point shots.

The Hornets will look to even their SEC record at home against Tecumseh 7 p.m. Friday.

In junior varsity action, Lincoln defeated Saline 41-35. Jacob Fosdick scored 14 points to lead the Hornets.
