Hornets score six in victory

Saline gets 10th win of season, 6-3 over Dearborn Unified

By Kevin Korpal, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: February 7, 2008

The Saline Hornets hockey team started the game off right Saturday night against the Dearborn Unified Gladiators, scoring a pair of goals late in the first period, creating a lead they would not give up in a 6-3 win.

Frankie Rutkowski started the scoring for Saline (10-7-1) with three minutes left in the first period. He was assisted by Matt Marsh and Justin Owen.

Two minutes later Cory Corker capitalized on a power play chance scoring Saline's second goal of the game on an assist from Cory Farrell.

Much of the game was marred by penalties on both sides of the puck. Saline ended up with 18 penalty minutes, while Dearborn United ended the game with 20 penalty minutes.

Saline was hurt by one of those penalties midway through the second period, when Mike Coon scored Dearborn United's first goal with six seconds remaining on the power play.

Saline was able to widen the gap when David Dager snuck the puck over Dearborn United goalie Brad Hajec's left shoulder. Farrell's second assist of the night helped put the Hornets up 3-1.

Dearborn United closed that gap 45 seconds later with their second goal of the game. Eric Holgate went five-hole to beat Saline goalie Nick Colarossi and bring the Gladiators within one goal of the Hornets.

The Hornets did not let the close score faze them. Jack Wallace took control of the puck after a pass from Kevin Fisher and scored the Hornets fourth goal of the night with five minutes left in the second period.

Dearborn United's Steven Wilson was called for tripping with 1:15 left in the second period, but 20 seconds later Saline's Dager was put in the penalty box as well for hooking. Dearborn's Coon would score on the resulting four-on-four again to cut Saline's lead to one with four seconds left.

The open ice of another four-on-four early in the third period seemed to help Saline when Farrell scored to put Saline up 5-3. Scott Peck and Wallace helped take the puck down the ice for the assists.

With 42 seconds left in the game Dearborn United pulled their goalie to get an extra man on the ice. It did not help them. Daniel Filipsson intercepted a pass in Saline's zone and passed the puck to Ryan Luke, who deposited it in the empty net to seal the deal for Saline.

Saline head coach Drew Denzin saw what he called "characteristically, kind of a lull" in the second period.

"When we feel we have an advantage we let up a little bit," Denzin said. "But I'm proud of the way we kept playing. We didn't give up."

Denzin also gave credit to his team's ability to prosper in a tightly called game.

"I'm proud of the way they killed penalties," Denzin said. "I think we've matured enough to keep a level head even when some penalties are questionable."

Allen Park 5, Saline 3

The Hornets fell on the road by two to the Jaguars in a Metro League game Jan. 30.

Sean MacNeil scored two of the Hornet goals with Luke recording the third. Filipsson, Farrell, Alex Stowe, and Scott Peck each had one assist in the defeat.

Howell 4, Saline 1

Saline hit the road again Monday and struggled offensively in their loss to Howell.

MacNeil scored the Hornets' only goal on an assist from Cory Corker.
