As of Tuesday, three had filed in Milan and four in Saline

Candidates for school board had until 4 p.m. Wednesday to file with the Washtenaw County Clerk's Office.

The filing time was past the newspaper's deadline.

As of Tuesday afternoon, three candidates had filed in Milan and four in Saline for two open board seats in each of those districts.

Milan school board incumbent Mary Mehringer is seeking a second four-year term and will be joined on the May 6 ballot by John Leacher and Mary Hoevemeyer Wines.

Leacher, 45, is a lieutenant with the Romulus Police Department and has been a police officer for 20 years. He served on the school board in Airport for five years before his family moved to Milan three years ago.

He and his wife of 19 years, Betty, have two daughters in Milan schools.

Leacher made an unsuccessful bid for school board last year.

"Based on my experience, I think I'd be a positive influence and help the district move forward," he said.

Wines, 45, was born in Milan and moved back to the area in 1998. She is self-employed and ha four daughters between the ages of 15 and 21 who have attended Milan schools.

"I want to give back to the community and this seemed like a good time to do that," Wines said.

Dennis Albers, whose term expires this year, announced last week that because of job commitments he did not intend to run for another term.

In addition to Saline Board of Education President Lisa Slawson, who is running for a second four-year term, Chuck Lesch, Daniel Krus and Mark Morsfield have filed to run.

After finishing out a three-year term, Kim Van Hoek is not seeking re-election.

Lesch, 46, is a preclinical scientist who worked for Pfizer and has lived in Saline for 17 years. He and his wife of 25 years, Jean, have two daughters. He has a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's in science education.

"I've considered running for years," Lesch said. "I felt it was my time to step up to the plate."

Morsfield, 48, who has lived in Saline for 15 years, is the chief financial officer at a life sciences company in Ann Arbor. He and his wife of 22 years, Valerie, have three children, two of whom are at the high school.

"I have the desire to help participate in bringing stability to the school district as a whole and the board in specific," he said.

Krus, 49, is a technology consultant who, with his wife of 26 years, Linda, has three children in the district. An adjunct faculty member at Washtenaw Community College, Krus earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1988 and a master's degree in analytical chemistry in 1993 from the University of New Hampshire.

"I'd like to be part of the process of changing the governance model."
