The competition featured twirlers from high schools, colleges and universities in a dozen states from Connecticut to Texas.
Saline won both the high school team and pairs events, with Cindy Bruckner taking first in the individual High School One and Two Baton events and teaming up with Stacey Girbach to win the Pairs.
Girbach also finished runner-up to Bruckner in both One and Two Baton events, and took a third second-place medal in the Three Baton competition. Saline's Mary Ciotta placed third in both the Three Baton and Two Baton, giving Saline a 1-2-3 sweep in that event.
The National Collegiate and High School Twirling Championships were hosted by the Purdue University Twirling Squad and supported by the National Coalition for the Advancement of Baton Twirling, which is working to establish baton twirling as a scholastic sport at the high school and collegiate level.
The athletes who competed at the championships perform for thousands of fans at high school and collegiate sporting events across the country. They are both athletes and artists, demonstrating many of the same skills and qualities as competitive runners, gymnasts, dancers and figure skaters. Those skills include endurance, speed, flexibility, lightning reflexes and excellent eye-hand coordination.
