Saline fourth in Adrian

Saline still struggling with health but should be 'battle-tested'

By Jerry Hinnen, Staff Writer

The hard work for the Saline cheer team is paying off.

The Hornets enjoyed their most successful day of the season in Saturday's Adrian Invitational, placing fourth overall out of six teams and seeing their judges' score of 290.00 for Round 3 ranked second, making it both the highest scoreSaline has been awarded yet this season and the highest ranked.

"They did great," said head coach Launie Aben. "The girls were very, very excited. Talent-wise, the competition was more at our level. Overall, we looked great."

The Hornets scored a 204.5 in Round 1, placing them third. As has been the case throughout the season, Saline posted its lowest score in Round 2 with a 159.7, dropping them to fifth.

But by finishing with the second-highest Round 3 score — only 7.5 points out of first — the Hornets pulled themselves up to fourth.

Aben said that given the level of competition, if the Hornets had to do the invitational over again, she would hope for an even higher finish. But she was, nonetheless, more than happy with her team's performance.

"I felt like we might have done even better," she said, "but when you look at what we accomplished in Rounds 1 and 3, we're very pleased."

Perhaps the biggest plus for the Hornets from the performance was that it gave the team momentum headed into Wednesday's home Invitational.

"When you go against the big teams that qualify for state, it's easy get down on yourself," Aben said. "I definitely feel like this is going to give us a lot of confidence going into our own competition."

Coverage of the Saline Cheer Invitational will be available in next week's edition.
