The Hornets built on their season-best performance the previous Saturday at Adrian by placing second in a four-team field at their own Saline Cheer Invitational Feb. 13.
Saline took second behind North Farmington with an overall score of 625.674, which was slightly more than 40 points behind Farmington's first-place 665.9.
"Saturday really propelled us into our performance today," said Saline head coach Launie Aben. "We made a couple of mistakes in Round 2, but we had a solid routine in Round 3. We're proud of the girls and they're excited about how they did."
Adrian took third with a score of 602.1435, while the Bedford JV the only JV squad in attendance after a late cancellation took first in the JV division with a score of 609.005.
The invitational was just the second home competition ever for Saline's second-year program and the Hornets said afterward (despite Aben's worries it might be "nerve-racking) they had gotten a charge out of performing in their home gymnasium in front of a large home crowd.
"We had the home turf advantage," said junior Tori Walega. "It was fun having our fans here supporting us. We were happy with second place."
"This was the most fun competition I've cheered at," said junior Tara Dauer. "We've improved every day in practice and you could see today that we're getting better."
Saline kicked off the meet with a 185.25 in the "flat cheer" Round 1 before slipping to a 162.924 in the "skills"-based Round 2.
Those scores placed the Hornets fourth in the field entering the "combination" Round 3, but the Hornets put together the highest-ranked routine in that final round awarded a 277.5 to overtake the Maples for second.
"We had a couple of little execution errors," said Aben, "but they pulled it off. I'm proud of all the obstacles the team has overcome this season."
The Hornets will look to keep their momentum going Saturday when they travel to the Tecumseh Invitational.
