Michigan Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction starting later this month and over the course of the summer as construction projects head downtown.
About 15 business owners attended an open house last Thursday night hosted by the Michigan Department of Transportation to learn more about the projects.
Workers will begin the third week in March reconstructing US-12 from Maple Road to Industrial Drive, closing the roadway down to one-lane traffic in each direction. MDOT representatives said the contractor expects to work 12-hour days from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. six days a week and hopes to complete the project the first part of August. Work on the water main between Maple Road and Industrial Drive was completed in mid-December
The 3.5-mile stretch of US-12 is now ready to be completely reconstructed.
"The base of the road is inadequate," said Saline City Manager Larry Stoever. "It's failing and needs to be replaced."
The $5.5 million project will extend the life of the pavement and provide a smoother ride for motorists, said MDOT spokewoman Kari Arend.
On the west side of town, work will begin April 1 to mil and repave the section of US-12 from Austin Road to Shill. The work is expected to be completed by midsummer.
While one-lane traffic will be maintained during the projects, all business entrances will be open and businesses will be allowed to install temporary signs by permit from the City Building Department.
