Designed to recognize outstanding contributions to the preservation and revitalizations of Saline's historic buildings, Pride of Saline award nominations are being accepted through May 1 at Saline City Hall.
The selection committee, comprised of city residents, Saline Historic District commissioners and Saline Area Historical Society members, will look at nominations in six categories.
The Residential Restoration Award will go to an outstanding restoration of a historic home. Another restoration award will go to a historic commercial, religious or educational property in Saline.
Work done to preserve the integrity and materials of an historic home will be noted.
The rehabilitation awards -- one each for a residential and commercial property -- will honor exceptional construction work done to make possible a compatible use for the property through repair, alterations and additions while preserving the architectural or historical values of the building.
A New Construction Award will be given to owners or developers who have taken care to design and erect a building or addition sympathetic to the surrounding historic properties.
The Stewardship Award will give kudos to an owner who has provided consistent maintenance of an historic property or impeccable workmanship on property by a contractor.
The first ever Pride of Saline awards were given last year by program creator Terri Sibo-Koenig and a team of advisers.
Linda Klenczar, a local artist, visited each home and painted a portrait of the exterior for the homeowners.
In the category of Residential Restoration, Chad and Calesta Harrison were honored for their home at 211 S. Ann Arbor St.
The selection committee pored over the nominations and was inspired to create a special recognition, the Preservation Icon, in the award's first year for Jim and Cheryl Hoeft, stalwart caretakers of their grand home at 324 N. Ann Arbor St. for many years. The highly visible property shines with enduring historic integrity both inside and out, Sibo-Koenig said.
Nomination forms for 2008 are available at Saline City Hall, Saline District Library and at shops downtown, and should be completed and mailed to Saline Award Committee, c/o Jeff Fordice, 100 N. Harris St., Saline, MI 48176.
