No Sign of Signs

The City Council withdrew an agenda item with a motion to approve new sign and balloon regulations that would affect downtown merchants and local residents. The motion was discussed at length March 3 before council asked city staff to tighten the draft language. On Monday, Mayor Gretchen Driskell suggested that before staff sends the proposal back to council, they give a draft to the Downtown Merchants' Association and council members to review.
Mill Pond Repairs Sought
The council agreed to earmark up to $25,000 to support a Clean Michigan Initiative Waterfront Redevelopment grant application for repairs and renovation at Mill Pond Park. If awarded to Saline, the $75,000 would pay for construction of a 6-foot-wide asphalt path from the parking lot that would follow the river south to join a woodsy path up to the hospital.
It also would fund construction of a fishing and observation dock; stabilize the shoreline near the dog park using native plantings and install special ramps to help dogs climb in and out of the pond safely; continue native plantings to stabilize much of the shoreline; repair the base; and soil around Bowley Bridge.
Trees Tracked
Davey Resource Group has been hired to conduct a tree inventory, provide an urban forestry management plan and provide tree management software that will cost about $33,000. The city won a matching Urban and Community Forestry Grant to help with the bill.
