Running for the Spirit of Pre track club at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Washington, D.C., last weekend, Alex Leptich, Kate Carter, Lindsey Cummings and Meagan Creutz combined to earn All-American status in both the 3,200-meter and the 4-x-mile relay with a pair of top-six finishes.
The foursome ran 9:20.2 for third in the 3,200 and 21:31 for fifth in the 4-x-mile. The times set a new indoor school record in both events and were the fourth- and fifth-fastest times, respectively, in Michigan indoor history.
"Even though they are the defending State Champions in the 4-x -800, they still feel there is a lot to accomplish," Saline head coach Mike Smith said of the quartet's accomplishments.†"They had specific goals for the indoor state meet and the Nike meet, and they worked hard all winter to attain those goals.†
"They were really pleased with the 9:20. That's 16 seconds faster than they ran indoors last winter."
Saline also sent a team to Friday's Eastern Michigan Invitational for one of the final events of the indoor season and the first of the spring for many team members who did not compete in the winter.
Hornets finished the day with six top-eight performances, starting with a second-place 1:51.4 in the 800-meter relay turned in by Lauren Zakrasjek, Karen Gallardo, Taylor Franz and Rachel Nyberg.
The same foursome took sixth in the 1,600-meter relay in 4:26.9. Samantha Cannell, Becky Stubler, Brooke Pleger and Kari Frank grabbed sixth in the sprint medley relay. Gina O'Brien, Erin Dowling, Rachel Jackson and Chelsie Noble combined to run 10:45 for eighth in the 3,200-meter relay.
In individual events, Emily Everett took third in the shotput with a throw of 33'5" and Whitney McCloe placed seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 65.9.
