"From start to finish, the defense was phenomenal," Saline coach Brad Silverman said. "Our minds were focused on the defense."
Saline allowed Dexter (4-2) only one goal in the first period, a shot from Erin Donevan that came three minutes into the game. After the early score, the Hornet defense denied the Dreadnaughts any clear shots on goal.
The defense could not hold, however, and Dexter went up 2-0 less than a minute into the second period when Kelsey Johnson scoredthe Dreadnaughts' second goal.
After the goal, Saline turned up the defensive pressure again. The Dreadnaughts had opportunities, but Saline's Sam Crichton turned away shot after shot.
With four minutes left in the third period, the Hornets surrendered a shorthanded goal to Dexter's Paige Sheats.
Saline had a chance to cut Dexter's lead a minute later on a penalty shot, but Laura Kuzma sent the ball just over the crossbar.
With less than a minute left in the third period, Saline's Alyssa Hart was able to crack the Dexter shorthanded defense for the first and only Saline goal of the game.
"It's a big momentum game," Silverman said. "We held a fast team to only three goals. This is usually a high scoring game."
Saline defeated the Dreadnaughts 10-4 in the JV game.
Saline 13, Chelsea 1
The Hornets opened their 2008 season with a 13-1 thrashing of homestanding Chelsea March 17.
"We're really happy with how we played," Silverman said afterward. "In our games with Chelsea last season, we felt like we started off slow and let them stay with us for a while. Tonight we set the tempo from the beginning. We played the way we've been expecting to play for a while."
Alli Littlejohn led the way for Saline on the scoresheet with three goals, followed by Carly Haller, Kristen Kotlarczyk, and Kuzma with a pair of goals each.
Hart, Evelyn Shea, Brittany White, and Kassia Zalewski all added a goal apiece.
In addition to allowing only the single tally, Saline goalie Sam Crichton finished with four assists.
"That says something about how well our counterattack was working," Silverman said. "We created a lot of scoring opportunities and converted."
Saline's next home game will come Monday at 7 p.m.
