If you live near Brecon Park in Saline or would like to toss in your two cents about the future of the city park at North Harris Street and Nichols Drive, circle April 15 on your calendar.
File your taxes and then plan to attend a brainstorming meeting 7 p.m. at City Hall, where members of the Parks Commission will lead an informal discussion about how the 6 acres at Brecon Park could best be used.
The rolling landscape now hosts two basketball courts, tennis courts and assorted slides and play equipment. A paved walkway winds through the park for bikers, skaters and runners.
The park has access from Watson, Harris and Nichols streets, and there are two parking lots for visitors. Many winters ago, a portion of the park near Watson Street was flooded for use as an outdoor ice rink. And, in more recent years, a skateboard park was built, which met its demise when vocal neighbors protested the activity there.
"We really want to plan for changes that will satisfy the neighbors and residents who would use the park," said Parks and Recreation Director Carla Scruggs. "It's important to get the opinions, early on, of those who live nearby to best use the tight budget dollars that may be available."
Some ideas for the park may include a water spray park for children, renovated tennis courts, minimal skateboard ramps or enhanced picnic areas for groups.
The nine commissioners are responsible for planning, operating, constructing and maintaining the city's public parks and playgrounds.
There are 11 parks in Saline, offering a variety of recreational opportunities, including fishing, hiking, biking, picnicking and cross-country skiing. Some parks, including Mill Pond and Canterbury, have children's play structures and others, like People's and Wilderness Park, offer sports trails and bird-watching spots.
With goals to maximize the use of public green space, the commission hopes to gather opinions, ideas and feedback at next week's meeting.
Neighbors who cannot attend, but would like their thoughts to be considered, should write to the Parks Commission, 100 N. Harris St., Saline or e-mail recording secretary Jody Roberts at jroberts@city-saline.org by April 14.
