Students bring art projects to 212

A reception will showcase the artists from 1 to 3 p.m. April 13

Rob Kinsey likes rusty metal scraps. They inspire him.

When roaming the scene of a car crash, Kinsey spotted a rusty chunk of metal and stuck it in his pocket.

Emma Mepham cares about what scares people. She pored over a list of common phobias: snakes, clowns, drowning. Her charcoal drawing of a scared young girl in a hospital bed is done, ready to be framed.

Kinsey's found object, one of many he uses in his art, now sits atop the teapot he created for his senior year Advanced Placement class project at Saline High School.

Kinsey's and Mepham's work, along with the final projects of nine other Saline High School seniors, will be exhibited through the beginning of May at Two Twelve Arts Center in Saline, and the students will be the stars at a reception in their honor next April 13.

These talented AP art students are pursuing college-level credits during their senior year, working on a portfolio of projects, artist statements and presentations that will go to a national board to determine whether or not those credits will be awarded.

"It's awesome to have the opportunity to do the AP work," said Kinsey from department head Cyndi Koppelman's bright classroom. "We all play off one another's ideas and are working together to meet these deadlines."

A calendar marking important deadlines hangs by the big windows in the room that overlook the outdoor kilns and large open-air shop in the art department.

"We are really lucky to have such amazing facilities here," said Kinsey, who moved from Tecumseh at the end of his junior year and notes how the program in Saline is "much more college-driven."

"Everyone here takes AP classes," he said.

The students will have their work on display at Two Twelve Arts Center through May 6 and will be the stars at an opening reception April 13 at the gallery. Their work also will be displayed at the Spring Art Show May 9 through 11 at the high school. In addition, some work will be displayed at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival at Western Michigan University.

The group includes Cyndi Koppelman's sculpture and pottery students — Kinsey, Breanna Bladowski, Joey Caruana, Christie Westmaas and John Wright — and Janet Hughes' drawing and painting students — Mepham, Sarah Cowen, Dianna Durham, Amanda Jones, Laurel Twist and Stephanie Blank.

Each student will show two works from his or her area of concentration.

Margie Bovee, director at Two Twelve, is thrilled to be hosting the exhibit.

"These kids are extremely talented. Bringing them out of the classroom into a gallery setting is as important for them as it is for us," she said.

The collaboration between the school and gallery began last fall when district art teachers met with Bovee and her community outreach group at Two Twelve.

"We agreed it would be a great experience for the students to set their work outside the four walls of school," Bovee said.

The free reception, open to the public, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. April 13 at 212 W. Michigan Ave.
