County sheriff's office needs new leadership

I want to take the liberty to publicly announce my candidacy for sheriff of Washtenaw County. My motivation for pursuing this office is simple and straightforward: My family and I truly enjoy living in Washtenaw County and we want to continue to contribute to its continued growth and work with county residents to improve our community.

Much of my adult life has been dedicated to public service and contributing time and my experience to positively impact the quality of life in our community. I will bring 20-plus years of professional law enforcement experience to the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, including serving as commander of both the corrections and law enforcement divisions and working in the public and private sector, providing training on policing and public safety to community groups and their public safety organizations.

I have witnessed the devastating impact on a community when there is an absence of leadership in their public safety organization and when there is no vision, and delivery of quality service to the public is no longer a top priority.

I have witnessed the missed opportunities when an administration closes rank and adopts an "us-versus-them" approach to addressing community-based challenges. I believe that the effectiveness of law enforcement is lost when residents lose faith and trust in the organization that is responsible for serving and protecting them.

I have also witnessed the enhanced quality of life in a community when the leadership of their public safety agency recognizes the value of working with their residents, embraces the concept of openness with the public, understands the level of influence that comes with the office, and is dedicated to using that influence to improve the quality of life of all its residents.

I believe that the residents of Washtenaw County deserve a sheriff's office that is committed to delivering quality public safety services to the entire community, understands the value of relationships and strives to build long-lasting and effective partnerships, believes in staff development and motivates staff to perform at a high level.

I have the experience and will provide the leadership necessary to create a sheriff's office that Washtenaw County deserves. If elected sheriff, I will develop partnerships with a motivated and committed staff, residents in the community, local governmental units and colleagues in the criminal justice community.

Together with my leadership, we will change how public safety services are delivered in Washtenaw County and restore the commitment to excellence within the Washtenaw County Sheriff Office.
