After a little more than six months on the job, Saline Superintendent Beverley Geltner received passing marks from the school board, which issued its performance appraisal March 27.

"This is my report card," Geltner told the more than 30 students gathered in the boardroom.
Geltner was appraised in three areas: key goals and objectives, personal and leadership skills, and key areas of responsibility. In each category, the board rated her performance as fully meeting expectations.
"Dr. Geltner continues to move the district forward," reads the evaluation. "In a short time at the helm, Dr. Geltner has established changes and procedures for improvement, focusing on the immediate needs of the district."
Geltner joined the district in the midst of a crippling financial crisis and was tasked with cutting more than a million dollars from the budget and reaching a conclusion to stalled contract negotiations with the teachers' union.
In its appraisal, the board often cited Geltner's educational experience and was positive about her leadership qualities.
"The dynamic nature of Dr. Geltner's leadership has received much attention over the past year," reads the review. "She has made strides in changing the culture of the school district."
The board was pleased with Geltner's efforts to establish productive relationships with people inside and close to the district. She has held numerous "Coffees with the Superintendent" open to the public and distributed a "Monday Morning Highlights" e-mail to district mailing lists.
"She has made a concerted effort to be visible and available to parents, and other stakeholders," according to the review.
Following its appraisal, the board will now consider Geltner's contract, but the superintendent announced that neither she nor her administrative cabinet of Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services Tom Wall, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Betty Rosen-Leacher and Deputy Superintendent Nancy Brenton would accept pay raises for next year.
"We want to set an example," she said.
