Hornets blast Braves 21-0

Saline's lacrosse team headed into a long spring break-induced break with momentum. But if it hadn't been for the weather, the Hornets might have had even more.

At home against Ypsilanti March 28, Saline overwhelmed the overmatched Braves 21-0. Scott Harris led the onslaught with four first-period goals, finishing with five and a pair of assists.
But arguably as important for Saline's self-confidence was the brief performance they had put together in Ann Arbor taking on Ann Arbor Huron the day before. In the first real test of Saline's season, two Ben Donahue goals had helped stake the Hornets to a 4-2 first-period lead over the River Rats.
Unfortunately for Saline, that lead meant little as bad weather rolled in and the game was called due to lightning.
"I'm hoping we can reschedule it and pick up right where we left off," said Saline head coach John Phillips. "Up until that point, we had played very well. It was shaping up to be a good game."
The Hornets took out some of their frustration from having that opportunity taken away from them on the visiting Braves. A Kelly O'Sullivan goal gave Saline six goals in the game's first 6:39. Two more from Harris and Shane Jay-Garfein put the home team ahead 10-0 after just one period.
Saline would go on to lead 17-0 at halftime and 19-0 after three periods.
Phillips said the game's lack of competition kept it from being little more than a scrimmage for the Hornets, but he was still happy to have played it.
"The biggest thing is that we came out with no injuries," he said. "We also got some guys who don't get a lot of playing time a lot of minutes and they can learn from that experience. It's a chance to learn sportsmanship, as well. When their goalie made a good save, our guys would yell 'Good save.' That's good to see."
The rout also gave plenty of Hornets a chance to get their names into the scorebook. In addition to Harris' five goals, Saline got three each from Jay-Garfein, Grant Phillips and Ryan Crawford, while O'Sullivan, Matt Dysko, Ryan Luke, Mike Lahaszow, Joe Cosimo, Bobby Bianchi and Evan Kourtjian scored one each.
Twelve different Hornets also registered assists, including backup goalie Ryan O'Neil.
Saline's next game won't be until April 13 at Tecumseh, a span of 16 days between action, but John Phillips is confident the Hornets will be able to knock off the rust even after their spring break.
"We'll have four good days of practice," he said. "We've got a really good schedule. We'll be ready to go."
