Local pooch named 'spokesdog'

PUBLISHED: April 10, 2008

A Saline girl's dog has been chosen as the Humane Society of Huron Valley's "celebrity spokesdog" for the Walk & Wag, dog walk and family fun day.

Libby, a 4-year-old terrier mix, is the winner of the contest. The Walk & Wag is the humane society's biggest fundraiser and will take place May 17 at the County Farm Park in Ann Arbor.

Libby's family, the Nowosielskis of Saline, first heard about the contest in the newspaper. Nine-year-old Avery Nowosielski wrote an essay about her dog and had her mother drive her to the humane society to drop off her entry.

"People ask us where we got such a nice dog," Avery said in a news release from the humane society. "When we say the Humane Society of Huron Valley, they say they had no idea you could get such an adorable dog from the humane society. So she's your little advertiser. We like to think she opens people's minds about shelter dogs."

The Walk & Wag will feature dog "paw-dicures," food by Busch's ValuLand, contests, prizes and other family-friendly activities. This year, radio host Martin Bandyke will emcee the event and the "Rock-n-Roll K9's" will put on a dog agility demonstration.

Event participants collect donations and then come to the County Farm Park to walk a mile or just have fun supporting the cause. To register for the event, visit www.HSHV.org or call 662-5585, ext. 127.

Net proceeds from the walk benefit the Humane Society of Huron Valley, the only humane society serving all of Washtenaw County.
