The Saline girls' varsity tennis team kicked off its season with a bang Saturday, inching out a strong Rochester team by a point to win the Troy Invitational.

It was a historic win for the Hornets, who came closest to winning the tough, eight-team tournament last year when they tied for second place.
"This was a great start of the season," said coach Andy BeDell. "For our first big tournament of the year, it really sets the tone."
The key to pulling out the win was the strong performances of Saline's doubles teams, BeDell said.
Winning their flights were first doubles team Sarah Cowen and Meghan Geiger; second team Kate Woolliscroft and Sarah Sidlow; and third team Shanna Cooper and Meranda Vogt. The fourth doubles team of Dayani Waas and Catherine Bernard were runners-up.
The Hornets needed every point to secure their first-ever win at the tournament.
The Cooper-Vogt match was tight and BeDell said he liked the control and concentration the girls showed.
"If they had lost that match, we would have been tied with Rochester," he said. "We really beat them as a team. It shows us we're deep."
In singles play, Bethany French, Kate Baxter, and Kelli Tice came in as runners-up in their flights with two wins each.
The Troy Invitational provides just the sort of competition BeDell wants his team to cut its teeth on early in the season - tough.
"The competition level was very high," he said. "We played hard all day, and we beat some very good teams up and down the board."
The Hornets tied Detroit Country Day 4-4 on Tuesday. The doubles teams won all courts.
Cowen and Geiger pulled out a 7-5, 7-6, 7-2 win. Woolliscroft and Sidlow won 6-4, 6-3. Vogt and Cooper won 6-4, 6-2. Dayani Waas and Julie Blackhall won 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, and fifth team Alex Van Asche and Catherine Bernard won 6-3, 6-1. The fifth doubles team's score did not count in the match.
The singles teams didn't fair as well. Niki Shipman fell 1-6, 6-7; French went down 1-6, 2-6; Casey Baxter lost 2-6, 2-6, and KelliTice lost 0-6, 0-6.
