The Saline varsity baseball team had a tough time sloughing off the bad weather blahs in its season-opening doubleheader Tuesday in Northville.

The Hornets fell 5-3 and 8-2 to the Mustangs.
"We looked and played like a team that hadn't been outside much," said coach Scott Theisen. "We made a lot of defensive errors and didn't get the big hits when we needed them. I expect us to improve."
After weeks of practicing indoors because of inclement spring weather, Saline's first two games were hampered by costly errors and too many strikeouts, Theisen said.
In the 5-3 loss, the Hornets got out to a 1-0 lead in the third off a solo homer from senior Adam Clements, but Northville took advantage of an error and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 1-1.
In the fourth, Northville pushed across three more runs, capitalizing on another error.
Down 4-1 in the sixth, Saline had the makings of a comeback when Clements led off with a single and Brad Guenther walked. Junior Jeff Baublit doubled to drive in Clements and Al Zeiher singled to score Guenther.
Back-to-back strikeouts ended the rally, but Saline was only down a run.
Northville pulled away again in the bottom of the inning, however, following a lead-off error with two singles to drive in their fifth run.
"Our defense wasn't sharp and we had too many strikeouts," Theisen said. "Not having been outside really hurt."
Junior Josh Burd pitched four innings, recording two strikeouts, one walk and five hits. Clements came on in relief, allowing one run and two hits while notching two strikeouts.
"Our pitching was OK," Theisen said. "It wasn't what it could be but I feel it will come around."
In the nightcap, things did not look up for the Hornets.
In the first three innings, they produced five errors that contributed to Northville jumping out to an 8-2 lead.
"We had some troubles tonight," Theisen said. "We need to see who settles into what positions. We're still playing around with the lineup. It's just going to take some time."
