Special Olympians from Saline joined the Twirlettes for a special evening of students working to teach each other.
The Twirlettes practiced three times in January to prepare for the performance in which all the students would come together to form one twirling team.
A buddy system was used to assist the Special Olympians work on their twirling skills and to teach the twirlers the skills of helping others.
"We wanted to not only offer a new opportunity to Special Olympians, but to teach the Twirlettes about patience, compassion and how fortunate we are to have our abilities," said head coach Susan Usher. "The message to our Twirlettes was we should work our hardest to use our abilities to the fullest potential."
At the basketball game, fans were given opportunities for volunteerism and general information about Special Olympics.
Saline Special Olympian Angela Hamman joined sophomore majorettes Abby Dotz and Mary Johnson in the singing of the National Anthem, while Miss Saline Mary Ciotta and Special Olympian Alyson Cunkle recited the Special Olympics motto: "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."
At halftime, the Twirlettes and Special Olympians took the floor as one team.
Other Special Olympians taking part in the event were Ashleigh Braswell, Chris Macy, Marissa Hines, and Aurelia Lirones.
