Superintendent Beverley Geltner said she asked for no raise in light of the district's financial struggles and to act as an example for other educators.
Following suit are Deputy Nancy Brenton, Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services Betty Rosen-Leacher, and Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services Tom Wall, who also waived salary raises.
The board also approved contract extensions for Wall and Rosen-Leacher. Brenton retired from the district and is employed through a third-party contractor.
Geltner's contract runs through June 30, 2010, but is subject to an annual review. The superintendent's salary is set at $120,000. Other compensation includes a $9,500 administrative annual stipend and a $5,100 experience stipend for achieving 20 years or more educational leadership experience,
The contract also awards Geltner an annual board-paid annuity of $11,000 for the next three years. She will receive 20 vacation days, 16 holidays, and 15 sick days. If Geltner remains with the district for seven years, she will be eligible for a retirement stipend of $20,000.
"I think the board is pleased that [Geltner] is bringing her experience and connections to the positions," said board vice president Lisa Slawson.
Slawson gave Geltner high marks for her accessibility to and visibility in the community
The board also credits Geltner with surrounding herself with experienced and knowledgeable personnel, Slawson said.
Geltner joined the district in the midst of a crippling financial crisis and was charged with cutting more than a million dollars from the budget and reaching a conclusion to stalled contract negotiations with the teachers' union.
In the board's six-month review of Geltner's performance, it cited her "dynamic nature" of leadership and noted she has "made strides in changing the culture of the school district."
The board rated Gletner as fully meeting expectations.
The board was pleased with Geltner's efforts to establish productive relationships with people inside and close to the district. She has held numerous "Coffees with the Superintendent" open to the public and distributed a "Monday Morning Highlights" e-mail to district mailing lists.
"I think the public finds her a breath of fresh air," said Slawson.
