Saline Area School District residents will get a chance to familiarize themselves with the six candidates on the May ballot for school board at an open Meet the Candidate forum April 25.

The candidates are vying for two four-year seats left open by the departure of incumbents Art Trapp and Dave Phillips, who after serving two four-year terms, opted not to seek re-election.
Running in the May 8 election are Terrance Bertram, David Friese, Suzanne Klein, Daniel Krus, David Medley, and Sarah Slater.
The forum will afford the candidates the opportunity to present their backgrounds, interests, and concerns and to field questions from the audience.
Each candidate will be provided a brief introduction and will then be asked to address questions from the audience submitted on index cards. Candidates will be allotted two minutes for closing comments.
The field is the most crowded since the hotly contested 2004 election when seven candidates campaigned for two seats.
The pool of candidates this election cycle is eclectic, including three teachers, a real estate agent, a lawyer, and a technology consultant.
Bertram is a lawyer who has lived in the district since 1989.
Krus is a technology consultant with three children in the district. He lost his bid for a school board seat in the 2004 election.
Suzanne Klein is a real estate agent.
Friese, Medley, and Slater are or were teachers. Friese, who has lived in Saline for 28 years, is retired after 37 years in special education. Medley, who has taught for 36 years at Belleville High School, plans to retire this month. Salter, who served two years on Saline City Council, is a sixth-grade teacher in Chelsea.
The election comes at a critical time when school districts across the state are bracing for bad budget news from Lansing. In January, for the first time in years, Saline laid off teachers, and more cuts are feared.
The forum will be held in the Liberty School auditorium at 7 p.m. April 25.
The Saline Reporter is sponsoring the forum, which will be moderated by staff writer Sue Collins. Anyone with questions or issues they would like the candidates to address is invited to e-mail their questions to editor@salinereporter.com. Please include "Meet the Candidates Forum" in the subject line.
