Hockey team hands out honors

The Saline hockey team recently held its end-of-the-season banquet to honor its outstanding players and seniors.

Seniors Jay Birko and Kelly O'Sullivan were each named second-team Division All-State as forwards while senior Grant Phillips was named second-team All-State honorable mention as a defenseman.
All three were named Saline Scholar-Athletes, and Birko and O'Sullivan were nominated for Academic All-State.
Also receiving an All-State Academic nomination was senior Bobby Schilke, who was also a Saline Scholar-Athlete, received the SEC Red Sportsmanship Award. Along with brother Randy Schilke, he also was given the Coaches' Award.
Senior Doug Nelson received the Metro League Sportsmanship Award and was named the team's Most Improved Player.
Other team awards included Sean MacNeil, who was named team Rookie of the Year; Kevin Fisher, the Sportsmanship Award; Cory Farrell, Outstanding Defensive Player and 2007-2008 captain; and O'Sullivan and Birko, Outstanding Forwards.
Birko and Matt Marsh shared the MacNeil Award for perseverance and loyalty to Saline hockey.
Phillips was named team Most Valuable Player.
Phillips also was named SEC Red first-team honorable mention and Metro League Central Division second-team. O'Sullivan also earned SEC Red first-team honorable mention and Metro League Central Division second-team honors. Birko was named both first-team SEC Red and Metro League Central.
