The Hornets dominated the first two events of their 2008 season much as they had in their state championship 2006 season. Saline cruised past Southeastern Conference foe Chelsea 153-169 April 9 before winning its first 18-hole event of the season, Monday's Maple Invitational in Adrian, with a score of 299.
The Hornets were the only team in that event to break the 310-stroke mark, with runner-up Haslett 14 strokes back at 313.
Playing the Wolf Creek Golf Course, junior Phil Gieseker took the tournament's medallist honors with a one-under par 71. Teammate Matt Paterini tied for fourth overall with a 75, while sophomore Peter Spittler made it three Hornets in the 19-team field's top eight golfers by shooting a 76, tying for sixth.
Senior Nick Campbell finished a stroke back of Spittler, carding a 77 to place ninth overall and round out the Hornet scoring. Nick Areddy shot an 81.
Areddy was a bright spot for Saline in the Hornets' season debut against the Bulldogs at Reddeman Farms Golf Course in Chelsea. The junior shot a 37 to tie Paternini for the meet's low score and help Saline to what head coach Carol Melcher called a "comfortable victory" and a long-awaited return to competitive golf.
"We're happy to be back in action," she said. "Lots of work still needs to be done, especially on the short game, but for the first outing, the effort was good.
"Damp-to-wet fairways and lightning-fast greens made it a bit tricky and definitely challenging."
Campbell shot 39 and Spittler 40 as Saline's third and fourth golfers on the day for the 153. Gieseker carded a 41 and junior Eric Brooks a 41, as well, in his varsity debut.
The Saline JV also scored a big win over the Bulldogs, winning 171 to 189. Collin Stauder led the way with a 38, followed by Brandon Augustine's 39, Keith Long's 46, Paul Sholtis's 48, Josh Collins's 51 and Ben Grace's 52.
