Both the Hornet boys and Hornet girls made short work of Dexter in each team's season debut and initial dual meet of the season April 9, with the girls cruising 110-27 and the boys taking an 83-54 win against their Southeastern Conference White division opponents.
"It was cool and kind of windy, but it felt really good to get outdoors," said boys' head coach Allan Leslie. "We liked getting away from those sharp curves indoors and our throwers had only had one full day of practice outside, so we were pretty happy."
The Hornet boys encountered stiffer resistance from the Dreadnaughts thanks in no small part to Dexter senior Bobby Aprill, who won the 800-, 1,600-, and 3,200-meter runs. But Saline was more than able to answer with a sweep in both throwing events and wins in three of four relays.
Junior Quinn Dawson won both the shot put and the discus with throws of 48'7.5" and 155'4", respectively, followed by Ryan Nowatzke (40'8") and Brian Bennyhoff (39') in the shot and Gabe Helmuth (134'6") and Nowatzke (121'1") in the discus for the full nine points in each event.
Two other Hornets earned a pair of first-place finishes, with Sam Burchyett taking both the 100-meter dash in 11.33 and the 200 dash in 23.23 and Marcus Johnston the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles in times of 16.37 and 41.63, respectively.
"That's a nice drop for him," Leslie said. "If you look at what (2007 All-State hurdler) Branden Post did as a junior, 41.6 is right there with what he did."
Junior Luke Dishnow grabbed Saline's other individual first-place finish with a time of 54.23 in the 400-meter dash. Dishnow was also a member of two of the Hornets' winning relay teams, joining Burchyett, Brian Hernandez, and Phil Goeman in taking the 1,600 relay in 3:36.73 and Hernandez, Blake Johnson, and Kevin Hendrickson in winning the 3,200 relay in 8:26.87. Johnston, Burchyett, Goeman, and Rainer Galinato took the 800 relay in 1:36.67.
The meet's outcome was never in doubt for the Saline girls as they won 14 of the 17 events, including all four relays, and swept the discus, 100 hurdles, 1,600-meter run, and 200 dash.
Hornet winners in the field events included Kari Frank (4'8") in the high jump, Emily Everett (30'11.5") in the shot put, Brooke Pleger (86'6") in the discus, and Rachel Nyberg (15'11") in the long jump.
In sprints, Corrie Castro (13.02) took the 100 dash and Taylor Franz (27.33) the 200 dash. Karen Gallardo won the 100 hurdles in 18.18, just ahead of runner-up Lindsay Pascoe (18.29) and third-place Becky Stubler (18.36) for the sweep.
Saline also unsurprisingly dominated the distance events, with Meagan Creutz (2:24.3) taking the 800, Kate Carter (5:22.9) the 1,600, and Alex Leptich (11:54) the 3,200. Leptich also led off the victorious 3,200 relay (10:27.9) that also featured Gina O'Brien, Erin Dowling, and Lindsey Cummings.
Carter, Gallardo, Whitney McCloe, and Emily Cannell combined to win the 1,600 relay in 4:20 while Castro, Nyberg, Gallardo, and Lauren Zakrasjek (1:51.9) took first in the 800 relay.
