April showers are sure to bring May flowers and the city of Saline is hoping residents will turn out to help prepare garden beds and rake up the last of winter's brush at the annual Park Clean-up Day from 9 a.m. to noon May 3 at Mill Pond Park.

Every year, the clean-up effort is held at a different city park and this year will be combined with Arbor Day celebrations, when three new trees will be added to the landscape.

Mill Pond Park is located at Bennett and Mill streets, behind Houghton Elementary School. Situated on 54 acres along the Saline River, the park is in need of a good spring cleaning.

Parks and Recreation Director Carla Scruggs said there will be jobs for people of all abilities and ages.

"We could put small trash bags in the hands of little ones and ask parents to rake or tidy around trees and under bushes," she said. "We will be fluffing the safety surface on the ROMP play structure, too, and possibly painting the pavilion."

Residents of Saline have been joining together on spring park clean-up for 17 years.

Angela VanSchoick, who serves on Saline Parks Commission, is helping organize the event.

"It's a wonderful way to meet your neighbors, work toward a common goal and make our city a wonderful place to live and play," she said. "It might even help me start working on my own garden soon."

Refreshments will be donated by local merchants.

Pick Up The Pace Saline is organizing its first walk of the season the same morning, starting at 9 a.m. at the Saline Farmers' Market and winding through town to Mill Pond Park. Participants are welcome to stay and help with any remaining tasks.

Eight PUPS walks are scheduled May 2 through Nov. 9 and generally depart from the South Ann Arbor Street near downtown at the farmers' market. This is the fourth year for community walks, launched by a task force from the Coalition for a Quality Community. Find more information at www.salinepups.org.

Also on May 3, Saline Parks Commission will launch its new volunteer corps, inviting community members to invest in their parks by joining the many efforts throughout the year to increase awareness and enjoyment of the 11 parks in the city of Saline.

Arbor Day ceremonies begin at 11 a.m.

For more information, call Scruggs at 429-3502, ext. 2509.
