Pioneer takes dual meet showdowns from Hornets

Both Hornet boys, girls threaten but cannot unseat champs

The Saline track teams each performed just about as well as they could perform at Tuesday's dual meet against archrivals Ann Arbor Pioneer.

But against the defending state champions, even that wasn't enough. The Hornet boys fell by a final score of 74-63 while the girls lost 78-59.

"We figured we had a shot," said Saline head coach Mike Smith," but there was no margin for error. None. We had to get a break here or there, and Pioneer didn't give us one."

"You have to give Pioneer some creidt. They did some great things today," said boys' head coach Allan Leslie. "But we're very happy with the way our kids performed. They ran hard. We had a number of PR's (personal records). This is a great rivalry and it was a great meet today."

The Saline boys dominated the field events, with Quinn Dawson winning the discus and Drew Jurgenson the long jump, Mark Caparese and Jackson Martin finishing 1-2 in the pole vault, Tyler Olsen and Josh Barbu finishing 1-2 i nthe high jump, and Dawson, Ryan Nowatzke, and Brian Bennyhoff sweeping the shot put.

But even that wasn't quite as dominant as Leslie had hoped.

Out of 45 possible points in the field, we got 45," Leslie said, "but we'd hoped for 43. Pioneer's kid threw 140 in the discus and split Quinn and Gabe (Helmuth) which usually doesn't happen. That's a six-point swing there."

For the Saline girls, most of the points unsurprisingly came in the distance events. as the Hornets swept first place in the 800 meters, 1,600, 3,200, and 3,200-meter relay. So intent were the Hornets on pressing their advantage in those events that Sophomore Kate Carter
