Saline JV baseball team off to strong start

PUBLISHED: May 1, 2008

The Saline junior varsity baseball team started the season 1-2 after splitting its season-opening double-header against Northville and falling to Monroe, then won four straight to stand at 5-2.

In Game 1 against Northville April 8, three RBI from Josh Redies helped the Hornets to a 5-0 lead. But Saline's pitchers struggled with their control and the Mustangs would score seven runs in the sixth to take a 12-5 win.

Weist and Cory Davis each added a RBI and catcher Garrett Gordon helped the defense by throwing out a pair of Mustang runners on attempted steals.

In the nightcap, a diving catch from Gordon in right field helped preserve a darkness-shortened 6-5 victory. Mike Sclater threw three innings for the win while Nate Hayes earned the save.

"We were fortunate enough to overcome some errors and walks and get the win," head coach Scott Stull said.

Sean Driscoll drove in a pair of runs with Steven Burke and Mark Sheridan each adding a single RBI. Burke recorded seven put-outs in the field.

Against Monroe April 9, the Hornets out hit the Trojans 10-6, but again struggled with their control, fell behind 3-0, and lost 6-4.

"We gave them three runs in the first inning on walks," Stull said. "We have got to be able to throw strikes or we are really going to struggle."

Redies drove in a pair of runs while Jeff Hissong and Hayes each connected for a double. Hissong, Hayes, Redies and Ryan Son each finished with two hits.

The team then ran off four victories in a row to improve to 5-2 on the season.

In Game 1 of a double-header against Davison April 14, Hornet pitcher Mike Sclater went the distance in a seven-inning complete game, leading Saline to a 4-0 win. Sclater gave up just two hits and struck out 10.

Saline scored all four of its runs in the top of the fifth, half of them coming on a two-run single from Garrett Gordon. Jeff Hissong also added a RBI in the rally.

"Mike Sclater was outstanding on the mound and we played well defensively," said head coach Scott Stull. "Cameron Keller's well-placed bunt and Gordon's pinch-hit single keyed our rally."

In Game 2, Saline scored four in the second on their way to a 4-2 victory. Nate Hayes got the win after pitching four scoreless innings in relief of Mark Weist.

Weist and Sean Driscoll each drove in a run as Saline won despite being out-hit 7-3.

"Our pitching was solid. (Infielder) Josh Redies' play keyed the defense and we took advantage of their mistakes to score some runs," Stull said.

The Saline offense exploded for a combined 35 runs in two wins over Fenton April 18. In Game 1, Weist and Cory Davis each finished with three hits, including a home run for Wesit and two doubles for Davis, and four RBI as Saline rolled 19-2. Redies and Ryan Son also each added a pair of RBI.

Tyler Owings pitched four innings for the win.

Saline put up 16 more runs in Game 2, but still had to sweat out a 16-13 win in four innings after giving up 13 walks. Saline finished with 20 walks in just nine innings pitched on the day.

"We took advantage of their mistakes and hit the ball well, but we need to be more consistent on the mound," Stull said. "We are going to need to figure out how to throw strikes before our league games start or we are in big trouble."

Sam Panzica, Davis and Gordon each drove in a pair of runs with Keller, Blake Burd and Steven Burke driving in one each. Panzica picked up the win after striking out three in 2 2/3 innings of work

Stull praised both Burke and Game 1 catcher Mark Sheridan for their defense.
