Student art show opens

Saline High School art students create self-portraits for exhibit

By Sue G. Collins, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: May 8, 2008

The works of some of Saline's most prolific artists will be on display this weekend at the Saline schools' annual exhibit that has been bringing students' self-portraits and seascapes, pottery and paintings into the limelight for more than four decades.

The Saline Arts Festival opens 4 p.m. Friday, transforming the wrestling room at Saline High School into a bustling gallery bursting with the color, texture and raw talent from students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

High school art teacher Janet Hughes, who is helping coordinate the show, said teachers from every school in the district have saved students' work from all semesters during the year for the three-day exhibit and work after school hours to hang the pieces for families, friends and fans to enjoy.

Kevin McCown teaches art at Pleasant Ridge Elementary and said he is bringing a wide variety of art to the show. Fourth-graders created African masks and ceramic relief, while third-graders practiced the style of Jackson Pollack and mastered pastel self-portraits.

Second-graders were busy conjuring up ceramic clay monsters and later listened to music for inspiration while painting in the abstract style of Wassily Kandinsky.

First-graders created self-portraits using a collage technique and later mastered tissue paper weaving.

"These kids created some really wonderful, colorful work," McCown said proudly.

High school art teachers Janet Hughes and Cyndi Koppelman will bring work from their beginning and more advanced students, featuring drawings, paintings, sculpture and pottery.

"I have at least 200 pieces from my students," Hughes said. "We've rearranged the room this year to accommodate more art. There will be some amazing work."

The Saline Arts Festival opens from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, continuing from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

A reception for artists and families is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday featuring activities for children, including T-shirt painting starting at 4 p.m. Students will be offering demonstrations in various media and techniques throughout the weekend.
