The event, Jump Rope for Heart, was a community service project and fundraiser for the American Heart Association. Students learned about the importance of regular exercise, while promoting volunteerism and raising money for the American Heart Association's research and education. Through pledges and donations, students raised $5,000 for the charity.
Deb Urquhart is the president of the PTA and helped organize the activities, bringing in Huron Valley Ambulance, Saline Area Schools food service director and nurse, and donations from around town.
"Heart disease and stroke are America's No. 1 and 3 causes of death," she said. "We wanted to combine a service project with a valuable fundraiser for the kids, teaching them early the importance of giving back. We're so proud they earned $5,000."
During the day, each student participated in several jump rope stations, where they practiced skills and endurance. They received water bottles and a pedometer from Director of Food Services Julie Harsh and her lunchroom team.
Jamie Collins, physical education teacher, and student council advisers Mary Ledford and Trina Bell were also instrumental in planning the activities. PTA volunteers helped children through the various stations, encouraging them to check heart rates and have fun.
The Jump Rope for Heart is a nationwide fundraiser, celebrating its 28th anniversary.
