Saline football fans will have all the usual opportunities this fall to experience the excitement of following the Hornets in their quest to return to the state playoffs.

But this year, there will be plenty of fans outside of Saline who will have the chance to get a good look at the Hornets as well. Saline athletic director Rob White recently announced that the Sept. 12 Saline-Chelsea showdown had been selected to be broadcast live over the Internet as part of the Great American Rivalry Series.
The Great American Rivalry Series visits and broadcasts high-profile high school rivalry games across the country in an effort to "celebrate high school football and ... its excitement, traditions and history," according to the Series Web site. Previous games featured include the famous Union-Jenks contest in Oklahoma, Hoover-Vestavia Hills in Alabama, and others ranging from Washington to Georgia. Saline-Chelsea is the first game from Michigan to be highlighted.
"This is a great opportunity to showcase one of the finest rivalry games in the state of Michigan," White said. "It's exactly the kind of environment they're looking for. We feel like we have a world-class athletic department and we're excited to have the chance to show what we're all about as a program."
Saline head football coach Mike Glennie said this week that there's "no other team" on the Hornets' schedule he would rather share the Series spotlight with than the Bulldogs.
"It comes down to respect," he said of the rivalrly. "We have a great deal of respect for their program and they feel the same way about us. The respect, the sportsmanship, the class is all there. They bring out the best is us and hopefully we bring out the best in them. And that's why you see the product you see on Friday nights when we get together."
In addition to the Internet broadcast, the Series will offer a scholarship to a player on both teams, a donation to Saline's athletics fund, and the induction of one former member of each team into the Series "Hall of Fame."
