If you're ready for some football, and can't wait for the season opener, then look no further. That's what promoters of the first annual Saline Football Fun Day are touting for events planned on Aug. 12 at Saline High School beginning at 6:30 p.m. on the varsity field.

"We want to make people of all ages feel they are part of our football program," said varsity football coach Mike Glennie. "The first ever Saline Football Fun Day is an opportunity for the community to rally around our team and have fun on the field, free of charge."
Events planned include a "Punt, Pass and Kick" competition, cheerleaders, Hornet tattoos courtesy of Saline Sports Shack, varsity player autograph signing, food, music and surprises. At 7:30 p.m. people can sit back and watch the fifth Annual Blue Gold Scrimmage under the lights.
"Successful football programs in Michigan, Ohio and Texas, have figured out that to win a state title they need the support of the entire community," said Glennie. "We're trying to transform Saline into a football town, so that Friday Night Lights generate game day excitement and draw a huge crowd."
Glennie pointed out that the Community Education Youth Football Program started last year, and has put a glimmer in the eye of many young players beginning as early as fourth grade. The program teaches the same Hornet offense and defense, which is carried through middle school and up to the high school level.
Coach Jack Crabtree developed the Saline football tradition as head coach here for 26 years. Glennie said that continuity was what attracted him to the Saline coaching job in 2002.
"Unlike Ann Arbor, Saline has only one high school," Glennie said. "Saline fans know the players and parents and have a proud sense of community here.".
The Saline 2006 varsity football season officially begins with the Big Day Prep Showdown at Eastern Michigan University's Rynearson Stadium at 5:15 p.m. Aug. 26 when Saline takes on Flint Carman-Ainsworth. Advance discount tickets are available at the Football Fun Day Aug. 12 and through the Saline High School Athletic Office.
