Dr. Joel Wallach, a 1991 Nobel Prize nominee in medicine, will present a free public health seminar for K-12 parents called "Student Success The Missing Link" at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 in the Saline Middle School auditorium, 7190 N. Maple Road.
The presentation has a 2 1/2 hour length and will discuss the missing links that effect student health, behavior, classroom success, standardized test scores and performance in school sports.
David Mellor, agriscience teacher at Saline High School, set up the seminar and said Wallach will give parents practical and affordable solutions to hundreds of health challenges that will give students a better chance at academic success.
Wallach will spend time, in particular, discussing the 40 percent childhood obesity rate and Type 2 diabetes epidemic seen in young people.
Topics such as attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyper disorder, autism, Alzheimer's disease and cystic fibrosis will be discussed. Parents also will learn nutritional ways to improve students' achievement in sports.
Wallach is also scheduled to be a guest speaker in Mellor's pre-vet animal science class on the day of the seminar.
As a veterinary pathologist and a naturopathic physician, Wallach has been involved in biomedical research and clinical medicine for more than 40 years.
His research has resulted in the publication of more than 70 peer-reviewed reference articles in the field of nutrition and pharmaceutical research. He also has had nine multi-authored textbooks and the authorship of a reference book on the subject of comparative medicine.
Mellor said he first heard about Wallach 12 years ago, when a friend suggested he listen to Wallach's audio CD called "Dead Doctors Don't Lie." The audio CD has sold more than 60 million copies and is used by more than 40 health companies to promote their products.
Since then, Mellor has attended one of Wallach's health seminars, where he was able to meet him. The two men have become friends and Mellor decided to ask Wallach to put on one of his seminars for the community of Saline.
Mellor believes Wallach's seminar will not only benefit all parents, but it will benefit those who are looking for more answers when it comes to treating ADD and ADHD.
Mellor said he is looking forward to Wallach's visit to Saline and hopes parents find the seminar beneficial.
"I want to make a positive difference here (in the school district)," Mellor said. "It's one of my passions."
