Expertise sought in developing teen center

7 p.m. Wednesday at Saline City Hall

By Sue G. Collins, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: October 2, 2008

Teens and pre-teens in the Saline area say they need a place to call their own.

That is a fact, confirmed by a thorough survey and town hall meetings led by the Saline Youth Council.

Now, the enthusiastic and organized youth volunteers are asking for help from local residents, business owners, Realtors, accountants, lawyers, marketing experts and creative types to help make their dream a reality.

The group already has formed a research committee to look at how teen centers in similar towns operate.

A teen center planning meeting will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at Saline City Hall. Everyone in the community is invited to attend.

"This is a working committee meeting, so bring your ideas and join in one of the five group discussions: finance, operations, location, research and business," said Andrew Schantz, Youth Council board member who has been active in spearheading the idea for over a year.

Parents, recent Saline High School graduates, city staff members and young professionals are already on board.

"We are looking for people who can bring their skills to the table, and already have the support of the city and schools," said Jody Roberts, Saline Parks and Recreation staff liaison.

David Rhoads, a City Council member and business owner in Saline, has watched the group's plans progress, stalling slightly now that critical business decisions are needed.

"I was concerned that the Youth Council might give up on the idea with so little progress being made, so I jumped in to try to help make things happen," he said. "We need more activities for our youth and a place for them to meet here in town."
