Plans for Oktoberfest, one of Saline's surest signs of fall, are under way for the annual Oct. 18 dinner-dance hosted by the Saline-Lindenberg Friendship Committee.

This year at Oktoberfest, 16 German exchange students will join the celebration of the sister-city relationship between Saline and Lindenberg.
Saline High School German teacher Bettina Hoops is helping coordinate the three-week visit in which the 15- and 16-year old students from Lindenberg will stay with local families, travel and immerse themselves in all things American.
"It's the best opportunity to deepen their language skills and enhance their understanding of our culture," she said.
The students will attend Oktoberfest, bringing their traditional costumes and music to share with diners.
Hoops, who was instrumental in founding the Saline-Lindenberg Friendship Committee, said the dinner is one of the group's main fundraisers.
"The food is always very good and the music is festive. Everyone is most welcome," she said.
Tickets are $20 per person and include a roast pork dinner. A cash bar with beer, wine and soft drinks will be available. Two musical groups will perform, Fiddle Pie and The Vagabonds, and a raffle for a handmade quilt, plus a live auction, will be held throughout the evening at the Tri-County Sportsmen's Club.
Reservations may be made by Oct. 16. Call 429-2328 or 429-2274. Dinner will be served from 6 to 8 p.m. and traditional dancing and music will continue until midnight.
The Saline-Lindenberg Friendship Committee also hosts "Stammtisch" 7 p.m. every third Thursday at Mac's Acadian Seafood Shack in downtown Saline, where German may be spoken over a meal. Everyone is welcome and no reservations are necessary.
