Sheets' had just left his house and was heading to Saline for mid-term break when the GMC Jimmy he was driving was struck by a transit van that had failed to yield the right-of-way at a stop sign.
According to a report from the Holland Police Department, the impact caused Sheets' SUV to strike a parked car and roll over. Sheets was ejected from the vehicle and pinned underneath it until a nearby officer and three citizens were able to push the vehicle aside.
Sheets was initially treated at Holland Community Hospital and later flown to Ann Arbor.
Ryan Sheets is the son of Marilyn and Charlie Sheets of Saline and the brother of Nathan Sheets of Chicago.
Marilyn Sheets said her son remains in a medically-induced coma with brain injuries, a broken clavicle and a few broken ribs. She said he is speaking and moving all four extremities when the sedation is decreased, and is responding well.
Sheets graduated from Hope College with a degree in education, but is at the campus this fall finishing his last math requirement.
A four-year letter winner and MIAA champion on the Hope golf team, Sheets has been helping coach Bob Ebels this season.
"He will make a great teacher and coach, and has provided our freshmen golfers with good advice on golf, college and life," Ebels said. "Ryan is one of the best that came through in my 18 years of coaching."
Sheets has also coached middle school basketball in Holland for two years.
At Saline High School, he played golf, basketball and baseball.
The family has set up a Web site at www.carepages.com for updates and communication about Ryan Sheets' condition.
